Whirlwind Romance

A rush of emotion dropped a veil over all but the tiny world of the two people in seats 11A and 11B, in a jet plane floating somewhere over the Atlantic, in a still moment in time.

Snowfall--Christmas Romance from Exquisite Christmas

Welcome Dee Ann Palmer, fellow contributor to Exquisite Christmas!

THE MOUNTAINS, A BLIZZARD, AND A SKI RESORT FOR EXQUISITE CHRISTMAS

Thirteen years ago, I completed my first romance novel in a writers workshop in the California mountains. Later, as a Public Health Nurse, I visited pregnant and parenting teens in those same mountains, becoming aware of how eagerly young men awaited the first snowfall because it meant they would have jobs. I’ve also been an avid follower of the winter Olympics, and, trained in emergency medicine, interested in ski patrollers.
With those experiences in mind, it’s no wonder I selected the winter settings I did for my romances— A Night to Remember and Snowfall.
Here’s the opening to A Night to Remember—

It was the worst Christmas Eve Marlee had ever lived through. Providing she did live through it, she thought. People who longed for a white Christmas obviously didn’t expect it to come with a power outage and a blizzard like she was creeping along in in her old Nissan.
Squinting to see, she switched the heat to the front and rear windshields. If she didn’t reach her house soon, the wipers wouldn’t be able to cut through the ice forming there. The snow had thickened and the temperature had dropped in the last thirty minutes.
“You had to have a tree. Going out in a blizzard to get that puny thing in the backseat masquerading as a Christmas tree was moronic,” she scolded herself…

From Snowfall—As a senior ski patroller, Riley’s job is to check the safety of the ski runs.

Now, from her spot on the lift, a flash of red from the corner of her vision drew her gaze upward. A man in ski clothes and helmet stood at the top of the closed double black diamond run named Satan’s Domain, poised as if waiting for a starter to yell “Go!” He mimicked breaking through a gate, pushed hard with his poles, and, knees bent, leaned in to set a blistering competitor’s pace down the fall line.
“Hey, you!” Riley screamed, waving a pole as her anger flared.
Whoever he was, he had no right to be there. He must’ve hopped on the lift while she was handling heat and coffee. He was trespassing, but the resort would be liable if he was injured. She clicked on her radio and called down to security to see if he’d arrived at the bottom in one piece. No answer.
The skier seemed to know what he was doing, but she had to be sure he wasn’t hurt. That extremely difficult piste, or run, hadn’t been groomed…

Devious by Nature--My Guests Mark Love, Jamie & Her Malone

Please join me in welcoming the return of Jamie in Devious. Mark Love writes great police mysteries usually set in the dark city streets of Detroit.

Thanks for having me, M. S. Although Devious was originally published by Secret Cravings, it has undergone significant polishing—leaving Jamie sparkling like an emerald, and not just because she’s got those beautiful green eyes!

Look for the next two Jamie Richmond mysteries, Vanishing Act and Fleeing Beauty in 2016.

Blurb:

Meet Jamie Richmond. A former reporter turned author, Jamie is a stubborn redhead who knows a good story when she sees one and can’t stop until she gets to the bottom of it.  She’s made the transition to author, focusing on mysteries. Wanting to give her audience as much realism as possible, she manages to hitch a ride with a state police trooper as part of her research for an upcoming book.

But the night takes an unexpected turn when she witnesses someone shoot the trooper on a dark and desolate road. Although it’s not a fatal injury, Jamie is intrigued by the events surrounding the incident and the ongoing investigation. She expects answers. If the cops can’t figure it out, maybe she will. Before she can get too far along, Jamie becomes distracted by Malone, another trooper she met that night. Malone has a mystery or two of his own, but it’s Jamie who has caught his eye. Things begin heating up quickly. Suddenly Jamie has more on her mind than she ever bargained for. She’s determined to unravel the mystery of the shooting.  Was it a random incident? Or is there some devious plot at work?

Excerpt (PG ): Delayed Gratification

I kicked off the heels and squirmed out of the stockings. I opted for a pair of very lacy panties with a matching black bra, and rummaged in the closet for a corduroy skirt and a cotton blouse. I called this my flirt skirt. It was knee length but had functional snaps that ran down the front of it. Depending on how flirtatious I was feeling determined how many snaps were left undone. I grabbed my bag and hurried off to meet him.
O'Leary's wasn't crowded when I arrived. Malone was in uniform, sitting at a booth near the back of the restaurant. Malone greeted me with a tender hug and a chaste kiss on the lips then pulled me in beside him on the bench.
"Saving it up for later?" I asked.
"Bank on it.
Malone opened his menu and scanned the page quickly. A waitress approached, wearing a green leotard and skirt with a black apron. He glanced at me and raised his eyebrows. "Want me to order for you?"
"Sure, I'm starving."
Malone turned to the girl. "We’ll have the roast lamb stew, tossed salads with raspberry vinaigrette, and coffee." He looked at me and I nodded.
"You eat here often?" I asked as she wiggled away. I'd swear she put a little extra swing in her hips for Malone's benefit. I didn't know whether to be angry or jealous. Idly, I undid a couple more snaps on the skirt. It fell open to mid-thigh.
"Couple times a week. The food's good and the prices are reasonable. A lot of the guys stop in. The service is pretty good too.” He winked at me. It was obvious he’d noticed the extra wiggle.
"You're a good guy, Malone."
He leaned over to kiss me. His left hand landed softly on my knee. I watched the expression hit his eyes as he realized this was a smooth bare leg he was feeling. Malone gently slid his hand a little higher. A shiver of excitement ran through me. It took several moments for me to withdraw from that kiss.
“Want to skip dinner?” I asked. I was glad this part of the restaurant was dark, since I was blushing beet red.
“I think we’re going to need that nourishment for later.” Malone reluctantly removed his hand from my leg.
After dinner he walked me out to the parking lot. He stopped beside my car and leaned against the door.
"Did I tell you how much I missed you, Malone?" I put my arms around his neck. His hands went to my waist.
"Nope."
"Would it be improper for a girl to kiss a cop while he's on duty?"
Malone's eyes went to his left wrist. "I've got two minutes before I check in."
He tipped his head down to meet my lips and kissed me warmly. If anyone was watching, I didn't see them. I didn't care. His left hand remained on my hip. The right had somehow drifted between my legs and undid two more snaps. The skirt was only fastened to the top of my hips now. A shudder ran through my whole body as his fingertips stroked me through the lace panties.
“Welcome home, Jamie.” Gently he pulled away and straightened up.
“Thanks for the flowers.”
“My pleasure. Glad to have you back.”
"How glad are you?”
"See you later?" he asked.
"Oh yeah. It may take me a while to be able to drive. And I seem to be having this problem with my door. It just won't stay locked at night." I pushed his hands away and stepped back before I attacked him in the parking lot.
"I'll have to see what I can do to remedy that. And Jamie…don’t change your clothes.”

The Fire Trilogy--Fire Witches and Romance from Devika Fernando

Welcome Devika! Tell us about your fascinating Fire Trilogy.

How I got the idea for the FIRE TRILOGY is actually quite interesting.

I react very powerfully to pictures, they set my mind whirring with all their possibilities. One Sunday, I was browsing the deviantART website where I have a photography account and love staring at fantasy art for hours. I saw an amazing picture of a woman controlling fire magic, and suddenly I just knew I HAD to write her story. I’d been wanting to venture into paranormal romance for a long time, and this seemed the perfect image to start with.
While developing the idea further and writing “Playing with Fire”, the whole elemental theme really found its way into my heart and I decided to write a whole series titled “4 Elements of Love”, starting with fire, then water with a mermaid-like story, then earth with a shapeshifter and then wind with a sort of fallen angel twist.

Alas, things worked out differently. Once I had written and published “Playing with Fire” about a year ago, I focused on the water novel and on another contemporary romance novel (Kaleidoscope of Hopes). But Felicia, the fire witch and main character, wouldn’t give me any peace. Must be her fiery temperament… She kept pestering me that I had just let her come into her powers and there was so much more she wanted to explore, that I had provided the perfect opening with the sort of happy but also sort of open ending of Book 1. Finally, I gave in and decided to create the FIRE TRILOGY. I wrote “Dancing with Fire” and “Living with Fire”, and I’m very happy with the way Felicia and Joshua (with his ice magic) developed. Now the nagging voice is gone and I can concentrate on the upcoming WATER TRILOGY.

You can find the pictures that started it all here on my Pinterest board for the books:

Playing with Fire (FIRE Trilogy, Book 1)
Dancing with Fire (FIRE Trilogy, Book 2)
Living with Fire (FIRE Trilogy, Book 3)
The Complete FIRE Trilogy (Books 1, 2 & 3)

Blurb :

When a fire witch and an ice wizard flee to Iceland to build a new life, they never expect the one thing that could tear them apart – Kyle, adding his own magic into the mix. Felicia starts questioning everything they have. She is torn between the man who loves her but is her polar opposite, and the man who attracts her but means nothing but trouble.
As if her confusing emotions weren’t enough, Felicia finds her life turned upside down when a terrifying natural disaster threatens the end of the country and the entire world.
Will she be able to control her gift and play the part that is expected of her? Will she give in to temptation or will she save the world?

Book 1 can be read as a stand-alone (and downloaded for free from most platforms). Book 2 ends on a cliffhanger and is part of the same story as Book 3.

The lovely Devika Fernando
About the Author:

Almost as soon as Devika Fernando could write, she imagined stories and poems. After finishing her education in Germany and returning to her roots in Sri Lanka, she got a chance to turn her passion into her profession. Having lived in Germany and in Sri Lanka with her husband has made her experience the best (and the worst) of two totally different worlds - something that influences her writing. Her trademark is writing sweet and sensual, deeply emotional romance stories where the characters actually fall in love instead of merely falling in lust.

What she loves most about being an author is the chance to create new worlds and send her protagonists on a journey full of ups and downs that will leave them changed. She draws inspiration from everyone and everything in life. Besides being a romance novel author, Devika is a faithful servant to all the cats and dogs she has adopted. When she's not writing, she's reading or thinking about writing.

Excerpt (G)
“I’m grubby. I need a shower,” she said, pushing to her feet to glance in the mirror.
The next image to take over his mind was stepping into a steamy shower behind Samantha. He blinked a few times and took a deep breath, hoping his thoughts wouldn’t inspire an erection.
“You okay? Were the boxes too much?” Her dark, chocolate brown eyes held concern.
He laughed. “You kiddin’? That’s nothin’. I take down guys ten times that weight in every game. Geez. What do you think? I’m a pussy or something?”
She made a face.
“Sorry. I need to clean up my words.” He sensed color in his face. He’d never had a girlfriend like Samantha Drake. She was smart, beautiful, and nice. She did volunteer work at the New Life Shelter for battered women and kids. But she wasn’t his girlfriend, only a friend. With no benefits. He sighed.
“My brother, Devon, talks like that too. You’d think football players never went to college.” She handed him a cold bottle of water.
He downed the liquid. “What’s next?”
She turned around in the room and sucked her lower lip between her teeth. “Bed, books, clothes, rocking chair. Hmm. How many boxes are still in the car?”
“Two.”
“Then that’s it. The place looks pretty empty.” She perched on the mattress, tucking her feet under her.
“You’ll have it furnished before you know it. Come on. I’m gonna bring those boxes up then take you out to dinner.”
“Thanks. Be right back.” Her thousand-watt smile turned his innards to jelly.
He sat in the rocking chair while Samantha washed the dirt off her luscious body. Or what he assumed was luscious. Sylvester “Bullhorn” Brodsky, known to his teammates as “Bull,” had the hots for Samantha Drake, and it was keeping him up nights. While he waited for her to want him back, his imagination ran through a half dozen things he’d like to do to her under the warming spray of hot water. She was a little slip of a thing, and he was huge. Six foot three inches tall and two hundred fifty pounds of pure muscle, the offensive lineman could lift her up with one hand.

Fantasy Has a Field Day with Tena Stetler's Books

It’s strange how book ideas form. Take for example, my debut novel, A Demon’s Witch.  During my youth I spent a lot of time at roller rinks—I even competed for a few years.  During this time my skating partner, Ken, was a hairdresser and absolutely hated the 1969 summer hit song Big Bruce, about a hairdresser.  One day that song came up in conversation while my husband and I were talking about the music industry, we are both former DJ’s.   We played the “what if” game. What if the hairdresser was an alpha male.  What if he was the Demon Overlord of the Western Hemisphere and owned a salon in Washington DC?  That’s how A Demon’s Witch was born.

Now with Charm Me, it was a strange combination of occurrences.  I’d just finished a gun class at a really nice gun club to get my concealed carry permit and my husband and I were taking our dog to Agility classes. One of the other dog owner was a yoga instructor who owned her own studio.  On the drive home one evening, I combined the two situations and started to bounce ideas off my husband. He is the best brainstormer. Is that even a word? Anyway, Charm Me was the end result.

I’d like to talk about both books today.

Paranormal romance

Blurb
Keeping a lid on all the paranormal beings inhabiting Washington D.C., is a daunting job. Bruce, a six-hundred-year-old demon and the Territory Overlord of the Western Hemisphere, keeps his finger on the pulse of DC’s power players through the activities at his highly successful Wycked Hair Salon. His movie star good looks and body builder physique keeps his dance card full and the rumor mills running. Within these walls, his anonymity is safe, mostly.

Bruce’s world spins out of control when Angelique, a pint-sized, gorgeous witch with an attitude breezes through the doors of his salon. She is the younger sister of Tristian, Bruce’s long time trusted enforcer, whose professional skills are second to none. Tristian is furious at the relationship between Bruce and Angelique, a dangerous situation. The undeniable attraction between demon and witch promises to tear apart both their professional and personal worlds.

Excerpt (PG):

Suddenly, he felt the magic aura shift and switched his attention to the front door. She breezed in, hair like spun gold flowing to her waist, with a seductive yet regal body and a sway to her hips that should be illegal even in DC. She wore a snug rose and cream colored sweater, cut low enough he could see the swells of her rounded breasts, tailored black slacks that fit her cute ass like a glove and four-inch spike heels.  She paused in the center of the salon, wet from the sudden spring storm, and lowered the briefcase she’d used as an umbrella. Her sparkling violet eyes glanced up to the mezzanine where Bruce stood watching. Blatantly her gaze wandered over his well-muscled body, undressing him piece by piece, until he felt naked. He shook his head slightly and smoothed his shirt and slacks with his hand, just to make sure he was still wearing them.

On the first floor, Owen, a stocky well-muscled man of slightly over six foot, with thick silver hair that fell to his shoulders, smiled and stepped toward her holding out a large towel. “Mother Nature frown on you?” His dark amber eyes twinkled as he watched water pool at her feet.

“It would seem so.” She grinned and took the towel, dried off then knelt down to wipe up the puddle.

“Don’t worry about it.” Owen snapped his fingers. Mia came from the back room with a wheeled bucket and a mop. “It’s been one of those mornings.” He reached out, took the towel from her, and handed it to Mia. “Now, what can I do for you?”

Fantasy

Blurb
Summer Dawn Riley’s an extraordinary elemental witch whose troubled past haunts her. She’s created a calm life for herself teaching yoga and keeping people at a distance. Her life takes a one-eighty-degree turn when she enrolls in a women’s weapons class and meets ruggedly handsome Devlin Sawyer. Devlin, a former Navy Seal, has sworn off women after two long-term failed relationships, but there is no denying his attraction to Summer. She intrigues him like no other woman ever has. Despite her attempts to ignore him, Summer is drawn to Devlin. His magic signature is strong, but he’s no warlock. Will Valentine’s Day magic find them a future together?

Excerpt (G)

Getting to her feet, she brushed the dust from her black yoga pants, tugged at the bottom of her bright orange tunic, and flipped the light switch on. A soft glow of florescent lighting flooded the large room, soothing Summer’s nerves. Guess she would never be the same carefree individual she was before the incident. Oh, shake it off. You’re safe and it’s time to get on with life. “Come on Pip, let’s get this place open.”

A massive stone fireplace towered in the corner.  She picked up an arm full of wood and flung it in the general direction. Logs landed in the fire pit and neatly arranged themselves in a tepee shape. With a magic flick of her finger toward the hearth, flames raced up the aspen logs. “That’s better.”

She raised her arms, about to send the yoga mats back to their proper place when the heavy wooden front door creaked open. Piper rushed toward the door, teeth bared and a growl rumbled in her throat. Summer whirled around and yelped as Devlin ambled into the room, black hair tousled and glistening with melting snowflakes. His nonchalance at the dog’s approach surprised her as he slowed to a stop. Piper sniffed around him, backed up a few inches, then stood at alert in front of Devlin.

“You scared the bejeebers out of me.” Summer held her hand to her chest as her heart thundered.

“What are you doing here?”

“Call your guard dog off and I’ll tell you.” The corners of Devlin’s mouth curved up into a smile, a faint light twinkled in the depths of his dark eyes.

“Piper, leave it…come.” The dog gave Devlin a last sideways glance, trotted back to Summer and sat at her side.

About the Author
With the majestic Rocky Mountains for a backdrop, Tena Stetler is a paranormal romance author with an over-active imagination.  She wrote her first vampire romance at the age of twelve, to the chagrin of her mother and the delight of her friends. Tena finds stories in the strangest places, while camping, kayaking, or hiking in the mountains. Even a song and the hair salon combined to create A Demon’s Witch.  So far, she’s only found one dead body (imagined not real) during a camping trip, turned it into an exciting paranormal romantic suspense that’s nearly complete.

For many years, Tena worked as a paralegal for a criminal law firm. You won’t believe the tales she can spin from that experience!

Colorado is her home; shared with her husband, a brilliant Chow Chow, a spoiled parrot and a forty-year-old box turtle.  She loves the adventure of a road trip. Together with her husband and their companion animals, they have logged thousands of miles in their RV visiting over three-quarters of the United States.  The northeast and Alaska are still on the bucket list.

Any winter evening, you can find her curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn.
