My review of Danna Wilberg's Broken Promises

Borrowed Time (Book 1 - Broken Promises)Borrowed Time by Danna Wilberg
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

If you like serial killers, psychics, and well-written, fast-paced prose, you’ll love Dänna Wilberg’s book Broken Promises, Book 1 of her series Borrowed Time. But I warn you: it’s not for the faint of heart.

Blurb:
Imagine being shot, thrown into a pool, and left for dead, but by some miracle you survive—only to be tormented by visions of young women being murdered…When Suzanne Cash’s dead fiancé, Jack, appears during her near-death experience, she credits him with saving her life. But he keeps reappearing, insisting she revisit her past, leading her to question her sanity his motives. Why would he lead her into the lair of a serial killer? And what is his connection to the victims? Detective Sam Metzger takes her under his wing and is drawn into the mystery, while falling in love with his protégé.
***
Wilberg deftly intertwines Suzanne’s psychic episodes with the real life chase after a serial killer. She switches from mystery to suspense halfway through, and keeps you on the edge of your seat to the very end.
I’m not usually a fan of serial killer stories, partly because the focus is often solely on the psychology of the killer. Broken Promises is more complex. There are threads of budding romance, of dealing with new psychic powers, and of the power of emotional connection to the love of your life, even from beyond the grave. I think my favorite character is Jack. The mystery of his motives Wilberg kept for the very end. Bravo.

My Maine mysteries

 My Maine Mysteries

Many of you know I write mysteries—you might call them cozy although I don’t usually feature a baker or cat lover. I like to use settings that are familiar to me, so many are set in the places I live or have lived. Two novels are set in the tiny town of Amity Landing, in Maine.

The Penhallow Train Incident

If you enjoy mysterious strangers, quirky romance, small town intrigue, more than one murder, and hidden treasure, you’ll love The Penhallow Train Incident. Set in Maine, it nonetheless manages to import Middle Eastern archaeologists, who set the hero and heroine on a search not just for the murderer, but for the tomb of the Queen of Sheba.

Mrs. Spinney’s Secret

What do you do when Hollywood wants to make a movie in your tiny Maine village? Cassidy Beauvoir, chairman of the board of overseers of Amity Landing, is ready to throw the bums out until she meets Jasper MacEwan, the director of American Waterloo: the Rout of the Penobscot Expedition. Their budding romance is threatened by a series of deadly incidents. Are they directed at the movie crew? Or is the target local Mainers?
